Ronnie walked down the street past the small grocery on Main and Dugan. Max was standing on the corner, leaning up against the grocery. He was chewing on a toothpick and shoved away from the wall as Ronnie passed and fell into step with him. They walked along without talking for a while, past the drug store, past the appliance store. It was at the laundromat that Max spoke up. “You going to the game tonight?” “No,” Ronnie answered. “Why would I do that?” “I’ve seen you there before, Max said.” Ronnie sighed. “I suppose so. It was a mistake.”
