A young couple was walking the railroad. It was winter, and the snow was deep enough that they left footprints in the snow filling the space between the rails. They walked shoulder to shoulder, heads down, watching their footing. The girl wore her hair around her ears beneath the hood of a white quilted parka. Her arms were folded across her chest. The boy’s hands were deep in his pockets pushing the lower part of his varsity jacket out before him like the prow of a boat. The jacket was a crimson red with white trim. The sleeves were leather.
