Mom led us back through the same doors and past the girl. All the kittens were still there, including the one Iíd locked my heart on. I didnít know gender. I didnít care if it was a boy or girl. It was grey with the tiniest patch of white, a dollop, a spill, a thumbprint, a cork-sized white mark on his chest. His belly was round and hot and his eyes were green. I held him up to my parents and said, ďI want this one.Ē Mom held the calico to her heart and closed her eyes. It purred butterscotch.
